Embroidery
by Sister Teresa Keswick

Sister Teresa writes: "I could sew fluently at the age of 6, having been very well taught by an old-fashioned countrywoman of great kindness and ability. I have always loved embroidery thanks to the wonderful start given to me.

After a spell as a criminal lawyer I became a Carmelite nun in 1983. As the result of leading an enclosed life I was thrown back on my own resources and, in consequence, taught myself to sketch and design. My status as an embroiderer is strictly amateur as I have no diploma from a craft or embroidery guild. I work on a commission basis, although I am hoping to hold an exhibition of my work before long.

In the last twenty years or so I have done embroidery for a number of churches, including: Altar frontals for St Andrew's church, Little Barningham (Norfolk); the chapel at Hatfield House (Hertfordshire); St Andrew's church, Much Hadham (Hertfordshire); and the Roman Catholic church in Wymondham (Norfolk).

Vestments for Ampleforth Abbey (Yorkshire) and other parish churches.

I have also made bedspreads and cushion covers for private clients, and am willing to undertake almost anything that is asked for."
